After a long plane flight that included a route over Alaska and Siberia, we arrived at the Beijing airport at approximately 5:45 PM on Wednesday, May 16th. I must say that the flight was not as bad as I thought it would be, interesting conversation with a Chinese national as we flew over the Bearing Strait made the time pass quickly. Surprisingly, customs was very easily navigated and any fears that it would be a lengthy drawn out process were quickly laid to rest as we were out of the airport in 20 minutes. Everyone was very friendly, I assume that they are getting prepared for the upcoming Summer Olympics in 2008 which are being heavily promoted as we speak.
I must say that Beijing is certainly not what I was expecting. The city reminds me of New York City in many ways, and there is no shortage of "American Staples" such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and KFC to name a few. The trafic from the airport also resembled New York City, it was not particularly pleasant sitting in rush hour when you've been awake for 24 hours straight.
I'm excited to do some exploring tommorrow after I've had a full night's rest and the sun has come up. Today was literally the longest day of my life as we followed the Sun half way around the globe. So for me, it's time to sign off and get some sleep. Talk to you soon!
